Gus lives in Lander, Wyoming with Davis and Pat Merritt. He was all set to come down for his NA test, but his owners had to cancel due to one of his patient’s taking ill.
Here is a note after his first hunting season (8 months old):
Hi Cheryl, Just a note to say Hi and let you know that Gus is doing great. We have had two pheasant trips and at least one day a week on local chukars so far and he is doing great. He is steady to point and very bird smart. I saw him cut off one running pheasant in Montana and he somehow knows when they run and relocates quickly, but points and holds them when they stop. He has a great natural back and backed a friends’ English pointers nicely in South Dakota last month. He is learning the wind and is careful around chukars and huns and points way off the birds; a great trait in a chukar dog. His retrieves are very good, but he is starting to run around with the birds and wants to keep them to play with them. When he sees a bird fall he will leap OVER the sage brush as he runs up to get them.. He is super intense when he sees a bird drop, I can’t wait to see his water entry and duck work next year. Because of his age I have kept him away from the water in hunting situations for now, but as soon as things thaw we will start on that. I need lots of advice about breaking him to retrieve and I need to teach him a recall command to limit his range a bit. I am not worried about him ranging to far since he is so bidable. He learns very quickly and wants to please. I think he will end up looking more like Honor and hunting more like her too, he is super intense and will work the roughest cover with no hesitation. In the house he is calm and is a great pet. He is definitely the best dog I have ever had.
